How does a catalyst work?
The catalytic converter in the car is an element that has been subject to continuous development work in recent times, due to the increasingly stringent requirements for limiting the emission of harmful substances to the environment.
The catalyst looks like a tin can with tiny honeycomb-shaped channels. It is in these channels that precious metals are placed, incl. such as platinum, rhodium or palladium, which react with harmful substances in the exhaust gas, such as e.g. carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons.
The most common catalyst malfunctions
Excessive emission of exhaust fumes is the reason why the vehicle registration certificate may be withheld during roadside checks. “Smoke” will most likely be the result of a faulty exhaust system, which is part of the catalyst. The catalyst itself is quite a delicate element and it is relatively easy to damage it. In order to prevent catalyst malfunctions, keep an eye on the operation of the car and do not delay the repair or replacement of worn parts. The causes of catalyst failures can include:
– worn spark plugs,
– incorrect, uneven engine operation,
– defective high voltage electrical cables.

Crack in the ceramic catalyst insert – this can occur after a sudden hitting a puddle, because cold water and hot catalyst will react immediately.
Catalytic converter core wear – this defect may be primarily encountered by owners of vehicles with an LPG system that has not been properly adjusted.
The lifetime of the catalysts is usually about 200,000 kilometers, so after reaching this mileage, it is good to check its condition as a preventive measure.
